The first Avatar movie, which came out in 2009, was the highest grossing movie of all time until Avengers: Endgame in 2019.
However, it has reclaimed its spot as the movie was rereleased in China, and it is sure to stay on top of the list with Avatar 2: The Way of Water scheduled for release in 2024. Though the sequel is going to come out fifteen years after the original, director James Cameron started writing the script for the sequel in 2012. Shooting began in 2017, and now the team is in the stages of postproduction.
As with all of Cameron’s films, The Way of Water has a universal theme. The theme of the original Avatar film centered around the theme of imperialism and man vs nature, and the sequel’s theme is centered around family. Though Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) and Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) have roles in the film, the plot is centered around their children and Pandora’s watery future.
