We asked him 5 questions…

You’re releasing a single with an artist named Sainte Croix on May 15th, then a full EP with Eryck Wyseman on June 1st… How would you differentiate the two projects?

A:With Eryck it’s like going to the office knowing all will go smoothly- no matter what trouble we may encounter. We’ve worked together for 7 years now. This new EP ‘‘Hot Damn’’ is our best to date because we know each other so well…
Sainte Croix is a whole other vibe. I’ve known him since I was 16. We reunited last June. There’s a craziness- a very positive craziness in our collaboration. Our single is entitled ”My Kind o’ People” and I think it will make people dance- which of course is our goal!

You’ll launch your EP in Manhattan then tour in Paris. Do you like the French?

A:Well I am half French myself- nationality and all!!! I like the young French, very much. And that’s all you’ll get out of me on that topic LOL!

Fashion wise, what should we expect from you next?

A:Well this time around I’ve a hairy chest and tattooed legs, my stache is thicker and I’ve let my hair grow a bit on the top of my head- was tired of the super short crop. Of course, I’ll still wear suits for performances. But I’m having a lot of fun with baggy jeans and dress pants. I love the wide leg these days.

Do you want to be liked?

No darling. I want to be adored. If you only ”like” me. That ain’t enough.

EOH: So, you’ve been quiet so far this year… What are you up to?

VH: Well- I’m stuck in Montreal, we are semi-confined, it is often – 34 F with the wind… I’m basically writing a new album with DJ Eryck Wyseman and DJ Villagomez… It’s how we survive the cold, dark, lonely winter! They’re my bubble- plus a neighbor downstairs. I see practically nobody else as we are asked to limit contacts… I must say though; I’m having a blast! I love what we’re doing! I can’t wait to release the new material!

EOH: How different are the upcoming songs?

VH: I think I’ve never had such a thirst for life and party. The new songs are like huge rays of sunshine. I just want to have a FANTASTIC time onstage in 2022 and 2023. I want to celebrate with audiences- not just give a show, you know? I want them to be the show as well!

EOH: And the new lyrics?

VH: Silly, funny, easy. I’m done with semi-intellectual lyrics. This pandemic has changed my art. I just want to have a good time now.

EOH: Tell us about your association with Chauncey Dandridge.

VH: Well- first off we’re really good friends. This makes a big difference. Like, we text almost daily. We wrote 7 songs together, after the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots, about homosexuality half a century later… One track, ”The Delight” came out last summer and did really well. It was just remixed by a DJ named Executive Realness. Thrilled! We have about 4 more singles to launch in 2022.

EOH: Are friendships important when collaborating?

VH: To me they are. I really can’t work with someone of whom I’m not fond. Every time I tried the result was a total disaster. Creation has to come from a place of love, at least for me.

EOH: And may I ask about your love life?

VH: Try me.

EOH: Is Van Hechter single?

VH: He is, and that’s totally ok… He has a handful of deep friendships. He has ”buddies” on every street corner. He has cousins to whom he’s close. He has a ”musical family”. He never thought he’d have it so good!!

As usual– and even from afar; we had a blast!

EOH: So- what are you most happy with looking back upon 2021?

VH: Well- I did ”explode” in an underground kind of a way. My solo songs ”Love Elastic”, ”I Am” and ”I Believe” charted while my duet with Stonewall Inn Dj Chauncey Dandridge ”The Delight” reached a million plays in a few weeks. It ain’t billions but it’s clear that we’re onto something. I get more and more fan mail. I get more press, too. I’m quite happy about that.

EOH: What are you most unhappy about?

VH: I want to do shows and the climate is still no good. Without shows the artist isn’t totally happy. God I hope 2022 will be less restrictive!

EOH: Is that why you’ve canceled your 10 week trip to Florida?

VH: Yes– here in Montreal we are asked to limit our contacts and to not travel. Cases have gone from 800 to 9000 in just a few days. It’s nuts. So— I decided to listen! I’ll travel next year! But I will miss all my Florida friends. You know- over time, some friendships turn into family…

EOH: What are you looking forward to in the future?

VH: Well- a remix of ”The Delight” is being released on NYE– by Dj Executive Realness… That’s a nice way to end the year. Then I have a few singles coming out in the Spring (solo and duet)… And at the end of the year I plan on releasing a brand new solo album; I am extatic about THAT! I’m in the midst of writing it right now and having a fabulous time.

EOH: What are you writing about these days?

VH: This time around there’s an absurd quality to my writing and even more humor. I’ve had a CRAZY year, romantically. I went from being single to thinking I’d found the love of my life and having that blowup in my face, to then juggling with 5 relationships at once, only to become single again! At times I was looking at myself, thinking; ”I am trapped in a comedy!”… I loved every second of it because I knew songs would come from such crazy states.

EOH: Wow! How does one deal with 5 relationships at once?

VH: I was exhausted! There’s only so much love a man can give in a day! Haahahah! And that’s all I’ll answer! EOH: Ok ok I won’t push! So- last; what do you have to say to your Florida fans?

VH: I would be nothing without you— same goes towards my Florida friends!
