For many audiences, Luke Arnold will always be remembered as the charismatic John Silver in Black Sails. Others know him as Michael Hutchence in INXS: Never Tear Us Apart, or more recently as investigative journalist Martin Scarsden in AMC’s Scrublands. Yet while his acting career has earned him international recognition, Arnold has quietly been building something much larger: a creative career that extends far beyond the screen.

Long before he ever stepped onto a professional set, Arnold was writing stories, sketching comics, painting, and staging plays with friends and family. Creating worlds wasn’t a side hobby, it was simply how he expressed himself.

“Storyteller is probably the closest description,” Arnold says. “Whether you’re acting, writing, or collaborating on a larger project, the goal is the same, serving the story in the best way possible.”

That philosophy has shaped every chapter of his career.

While acting became his first profession, writing never took a back seat. Alongside acclaimed performances in projects including Black Sails, The Pacific, Glitch, The End, and Disney’s Nautilus, Arnold established himself as an accomplished novelist with The Fetch Phillips Archives, a fantasy-noir series celebrated for its originality, wit, and inventive world-building.

Now, he’s expanding that creative universe once again with the release of Essentials Vol. 2, the latest installment in the ambitious graphic novel series he co-created with Chris “Doc” Wyatt.

Picking up after the reality-bending events of the first volume, Essentials Vol. 2 pushes its surreal sci-fi mythology even further while placing greater emphasis on the emotional journeys of its characters. The result is a story that feels both bigger in scope and more personal in execution.

For Arnold, the transition between acting, novels, and graphic storytelling has always felt natural because, at their core, they all require the same instincts.

Throughout his acting career, he made a point of learning every aspect of production, from editing and post-production to the countless creative decisions that shape a finished project. Working on productions such as Peter Pan, Broken Hill, and Black Sails gave him opportunities to observe filmmaking well beyond the performance itself.

“I’ve been lucky to work with people who invited me behind the curtain,” Arnold says. “It taught me how all the different creative pieces fit together and how much every contributor shapes the final story.”

That behind-the-scenes perspective has informed every creative endeavor since. Whether writing novels, collaborating on graphic narratives, or stepping in front of the camera, Arnold approaches each project with the same goal: serving the story first.

It’s an increasingly rare balance in today’s entertainment industry. While continuing to lead a successful acting career, including his current role in Scrublands, Arnold has simultaneously carved out a respected place as an author, graphic novel creator, and world-builder. Rather than treating each medium separately, he sees them as different tools for telling the stories that matter to him.

“I just hope the people I work with, and the people who read or watch what I make, feel that I made the project better by being part of it,” he says. “If I can do that, I’m happy.”

With Essentials Vol. 2, Arnold adds another chapter to a career that refuses to be confined to a single discipline. Whether audiences first encounter him through television, fantasy novels, or graphic storytelling, the throughline has remained remarkably consistent.

Luke Arnold has never simply been an actor.

He’s always been a storyteller.
