There is a toll on your mental health when you are one of the most recognizable pop stars in the world.
Such is the case when you are Harry Styles, formerly of boy band One Direction and now on huge solo tours all over the world. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Styles reveals that he is in therapy as he does not want to hurt himself or anyone close to him because of fame. Styles goes to therapy once a week, citing exercise for his body as motivation to exercise his mind.
He understands that his fans are mostly good people, and he tries to inspire positivity with his online and real presence. However, he also knows that people he are close to can get hurt simply by being associated with him.
He also reveals that playing huge shows for him after One Direction are still surreal. “We came offstage, and I went into my dressing room and just wanted to sit by myself for a minute,” he says, because “the energy felt insane.” Styles has adopted a post-concert routine of taking a shower, not only for hygienic reasons, but to also wash off the feeling of thousands of people’s adoring shouts and screams. The feeling is “unnatural.”
