As it should be, right?
John Mayer is revisiting his 10-year-old song “Paper Doll,” who was rumored to be about ex-girlfriend Taylor Swift. He performed the song recently on Saturday, April 8, in Sacramento’s Golden 1 Center, as part of his solo tour that began in March.
In a TikTok, Mayer admitted that the song sounded “pissed off,” and he was not really happy about it. He does not want to come across as “pissed off” in any of his songs, and even went as far as calling it “a little bitchy.”
“Paper Doll” is rumored to be a breakup song about Taylor Swift because it shares similarities to her song “Dear John,” a 2010 track off Swift’s album Speak Now. She says, “You paint me a blue sky and go back and turn it to rain,” and he responds in “Paper Doll” with “And if those angel wings don’t fly, someone’s gonna paint you another sky.” “Paper Doll” was the lead single for Mayer’s sixth studio album Paradise Valley.
Coincidentally, Mayer performed the “Paper Doll” on the same day news broke that Swift and six-year boyfriend Joe Alwyn split up. Sources say that Alwyn did not enjoy the fame that came with dating one of the most popular singers in the world.
